Abandoned cart recovery Shopify stores can measure in dollars

A Shopify store leaks revenue in three places at once: checkouts where the shopper typed an email and left, subscription renewals that fail on a subscription app, and refunds nobody reviews as a pattern. RevenueLeak connects to your store through an app authorization screen with read scopes only, shows each of those leaks in dollars per month, and sends cart recovery and payment update emails only after you switch the rule on.

What we read from your Shopify store

You approve the read scopes on the authorization screen yourself, inside your Shopify admin. Every read goes through the official Shopify API.

Shopify dataWhat the audit uses it for
Abandoned checkoutsCart value, contact email, time of abandonment, whether a follow-up went out
OrdersCompleted orders matched to checkouts, repeat order rhythm, totals after discounts
RefundsRefund amounts, reasons, products and repeat refunders
Discount codesDiscount size, usage and whether a code has an end date
CustomersContact email, marketing consent and country for email timing
Subscription contracts and billing attemptsRenewal dates, price on the contract, failed attempts recorded by your subscription app
  • The first audit reads up to 24 months of history.
  • Card data stays with your payment provider and never reaches us.

Abandoned checkouts that never got a follow-up

Shopify has its own abandoned checkout email, and if it is on, we keep it. The audit reads which checkouts it covered, which turned into orders, and which got nothing at all. The checkouts with a contact email and no follow-up of any kind are the leak line. For example, if a store has 30,000 USD of abandoned checkouts in a month and 12,000 USD of them received no email, the report shows 12,000 USD and applies your own recovery rate assumption to it, editable in the report. When you switch on the cart recovery rule, RevenueLeak adds the steps Shopify does not send.

  • A default three step sequence at 1 hour, 24 hours and 72 hours, every step editable.
  • Each email links back to the original checkout, so the shopper does not rebuild the cart.
  • The sequence stops the moment an order is placed or the shopper unsubscribes.
  • Discounts are off by default and can be added to the last step only.

The cart sequence and its rules are explained in full on abandoned cart recovery.

Failed renewals on Shopify subscription apps

Subscription apps on Shopify create subscription contracts and record each billing attempt in your store. Retries stay with your subscription app, and we do not change its settings. RevenueLeak reads every failed attempt, groups failed renewals by reason and shows how many contracts were paused or canceled after a failed payment. When you switch on the payment update rule, the customer gets a plain email with a link to the customer account page where they update their card, timed by the decline reason. A card that expired is never worth another attempt, while a soft decline often clears after payday. The mechanics by decline code are on failed payment recovery, and cards that expire before the next box ships are covered by the card updater where your subscription app stores a card in Shopify.

Which leak categories apply to a Shopify store

Seven of the nine leak categories apply to a Shopify store. Prorated upgrades and comped seats are SaaS billing concepts and usually stay empty for a store.

  • Failed subscription renewals without a full retry and email sequence.
  • Cards that expire in the next 30, 60 and 90 days on subscription contracts.
  • Subscribers on contract prices below your current selling price.
  • Discount codes with no end date that keep reducing repeat orders.
  • Refund patterns and repeat refunders.
  • Subscription cancellations after a failed payment, which are save candidates.
  • Abandoned checkouts with an email and no follow-up.

How each category is measured is on the billing leakage page.

What we read and what we never touch

The audit only reads. RevenueLeak never edits products, prices, inventory, orders, discount codes or theme files, and it never changes your subscription app. Cart recovery and payment update emails are sent from our side, from your verified sending domain, and only after you switch the rule on. You can exclude shoppers without marketing consent, staff emails and test orders. Uninstalling the app ends the connection at once. The full permission model is on revenue assurance software.

Plans for Shopify stores

Each Shopify store counts as one connected billing account. Cart recovery, payment update and card update emails share one monthly email limit.
