Shopify subscription failed payment recovery for renewals your app gave up on
Shopify subscription failed payment recovery starts where your subscription app stops. Most apps retry a declined renewal a few times, then skip, pause or cancel the order. RevenueLeak reads every failed billing attempt in your store, groups them by decline reason, prices the loss in dollars per month and emails the customer a card update link at the moment it is most likely to work.
Your subscription app keeps its retries. We add the part it leaves out.
What recovers a failed Shopify subscription payment
A failed renewal on Shopify comes back in one of two ways. A soft decline, such as insufficient funds, often clears on a later retry, so the timing of that retry matters more than the number of attempts. A hard decline, such as an expired, lost or closed card, never clears on retry, so the only fix is the customer entering a new card. Recovery software earns its fee by telling the two apart and acting on each one differently, instead of sending the same three reminders to everyone.
Where Shopify subscription payment failures turn into lost revenue
The money rarely disappears in one obvious place. It slips out through small gaps between your subscription app, Shopify and your inbox.
| Gap | What happens | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Retries run out | The app tries 3 times, 3 days apart, then skips the order | One box or one month of revenue per skipped order |
| Hard declines get retried | Expired cards are charged again and again | Days of delay and extra decline fees with no chance of success |
| Generic reminder emails | Every customer gets the same message on the same day | Low response from customers who just needed a nudge after payday |
| Silent cancellations | The app cancels after the last failed attempt | The whole lifetime value of a customer who never chose to leave |
| Cards expire before the next box | Nobody asks for a new card until the charge fails | A failed renewal you could have avoided a month earlier |
The 3 attempts, 3 days apart figure is the default in Shopify's open source subscriptions reference app. Recharge, Loop, Skio, Seal, Appstle and Bold each have their own retry settings, and most let you choose what happens after the last attempt.
How RevenueLeak recovers failed Shopify subscription payments
1. Connect your store through the Shopify authorization screen. The app asks for read scopes only, including subscription contracts and billing attempts.
2. The first audit reads up to 24 months of renewals and lists every failed attempt with the contract, the amount, the decline reason and what your app did next.
3. Switch on the payment update rule. Customers with a hard decline get a plain email with a link to the customer account page where they update the card. Customers with a soft decline get the email after the retry window your app uses, not on top of it.
4. Cards on subscription contracts that expire in the next 30, 60 or 90 days get a request before the next renewal date, so the box ships on time.
5. The report shows recovered renewals in USD each week, next to the contracts that were paused or canceled after a failed payment, which are your save list.
What you get for Shopify subscription renewals
Decline reason grouping
Failed attempts grouped by reason, so you see how much of the loss is expired cards and how much is insufficient funds.
Card update emails timed by reason
A hard decline gets a card update request right away. A soft decline waits until the retry has had its chance.
Pre-expiry card requests
Cards on active contracts that expire before the next box get a request ahead of time, from your own sending domain.
Save list of canceled subscribers
Contracts canceled or paused after a failed payment, with the monthly value of each one, ready for a win-back offer.
Dollar figures, not percentages
Every line in the report is a dollar amount per month, so you can set it against the price of any tool.
Read only access
We never edit products, prices, orders, discounts or your subscription app settings.
Which Shopify subscription apps this works with
RevenueLeak works with apps that create Shopify subscription contracts and record billing attempts in your store. That covers the Shopify Subscriptions app and the common third party apps built on Shopify's subscription APIs, such as Recharge on Shopify Checkout, Loop, Skio, Seal, Appstle and Bold. Your app keeps control of the retry schedule and of what happens after the last attempt. If your app stores the card in Shopify, the pre-expiry requests work too. Brands running both a store and a SaaS product on Stripe can connect both, see Stripe Smart Retries and Stripe dunning.
Subscription app dunning vs RevenueLeak, side by side
Your subscription app already has some dunning. Here is what it typically covers and where a recovery tool adds to it. Check your own app's settings, since features differ by app and plan.
| Capability | Typical subscription app dunning | RevenueLeak |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic retries | Yes, fixed count and interval | Kept as is, we do not change them |
| Different handling for hard and soft declines | Rarely | Yes, by decline reason |
| Customer email with card update link | Usually one template | Yes, timed by decline reason |
| Requests before a card expires | Sometimes | Yes, at 30, 60 and 90 days |
| Loss reported in USD per month | Rarely | Yes, per contract and per reason |
| Abandoned checkouts and refund patterns in the same report | No | Yes |
| Legacy prices on old contracts | No | Yes, contracts below your current price are listed |
Where your app is stronger: it owns the subscription itself, the customer portal and the retry engine. We do not replace any of that.
Who buys Shopify subscription failed payment recovery
- Coffee, supplement, pet food and beauty subscription brands with a few hundred to tens of thousands of active subscribers.
- Brands that see a monthly list of skipped or canceled orders and cannot tell which ones were payment failures.
- Operations leads who want one number for failed renewal loss before they pay for a bigger retention suite.
- Agencies that run several Shopify subscription stores and need the same report for each one.
Subscription box brands with seasonal or quarterly boxes have their own churn patterns, covered on reduce subscription churn for subscription boxes.
What recovery costs next to what a skipped renewal costs
Each Shopify store counts as one connected billing account. A store with 40,000 USD of monthly subscription revenue is in the Growth band at 149 USD per month billed yearly, or 299 USD billed monthly. If an average box is 45 USD, recovering four renewals a month covers the yearly price. Starter covers stores up to 10,000 USD of monthly revenue at 24 USD per month billed yearly. Every plan is on the revenue optimization software pricing page.
| Monthly subscription revenue | Plan | Price billed yearly | Renewals at 45 USD that cover it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 10,000 USD | Starter | 24 USD per month | 1 |
| Up to 100,000 USD | Growth | 149 USD per month | 4 |
| Up to 1,000,000 USD | Scale | 399 USD per month | 9 |
Shopify subscription payment failed questions
The subscription app records a failed billing attempt and retries on its own schedule. In Shopify's subscriptions reference app the default is 3 attempts, 3 days apart, and then the order is skipped. Other apps let you skip, pause or cancel after the last attempt. The customer usually gets one email asking them to update the card.
Separate soft declines from hard declines first. Soft declines often clear on a later retry, so let the retry run and follow with a reminder. Hard declines need a new card, so ask for it right away with a direct link to the customer account page. Then ask for new cards before old ones expire.
Most subscription apps let you retry a failed charge from the subscription's billing history, and the charge runs again with the card on file. That only helps with soft declines. If the card expired or was replaced, a manual retry fails again, and the customer has to enter new card details.
No. The app asks for read scopes only. Retries, the customer portal and what happens after the last attempt stay with your subscription app. RevenueLeak reads the billing attempts, prices the loss and sends payment update emails only after you switch the rule on.
It depends on your card mix and customer base, so published averages are a weak guide. The estimate on our home page uses your own monthly revenue and subscriber count, and the first audit reads 24 months of failed attempts to give the real dollar figure for your store.
